Who Needs Physical Therapy?

Benefits from physical therapy after an acute injury or post surgery are well known. But did you know you don’t have to be injured to benefit? Many of us live daily with unnecessary aches and pains and are in the habit of compensating for these discomforts. A low back tweak results in walking stiffly or we don’t fully turn our head due to chronic neck pain. Physical therapy teaches our body how to move normally, giving us more function and freedom.

At Therapy Plus, we treat our patients using Pilates-based Rehabilitation. Pilates has many benefits on its own, but when applied to physical therapy it can truly enhance patient outcomes. This whole body approach is very helpful for recovery while simultaneously creating a sense of balance and harmony throughout the entire body.

One area of functional movement we focus on at Therapy Plus is balance and the vestibular system, which is essential for normal movement and equilibrium. When this system is disrupted, it can lead to vertigo, loss of balance, and nausea. Causes of vertigo include prolonged bed rest and maintaining a postural position for too long such as in the dentist chair or at the beauty salon. Other causes include head trauma, dehydration, and older age. We treat vertigo without the use of medication and certain types of vertigo take just 1-2 visits to completely clear. If it does not clear, we are able to differentially diagnose and refer to the correct healthcare provider.

TMJ is another uncomfortable and often painful condition that many people learn to live with. Physical therapy is very effective in treating stubborn TMJ as well as the impairments associated with it including headaches and jaw pain. We start with a comprehensive evaluation of the neck, shoulder girdle, and thoracic spine to determine if those areas are potentially mimicking signs and symptoms of TMJ related jaw pain. We’ll then analyze your jaw mobility and release muscle tension in the neck and head area. Our goal is to restore normal function. Treatment may consist of electrotherapeutic modalities, manual therapy, craniocervical proprioception exercises, postural re-education, ergonomic assessment and patient education.

Our Women’s Health services at Therapy Plus are for women in all phases of life. Pregnancy, for example, is a common cause for experiencing low back or pelvic-region pain. Physical therapy during pregnancy can be helpful for alleviating this discomfort and for enhancing the body’s ability to have an easier and smoother pregnancy and birth. In addition, since many women experience pain for one year after giving birth, postnatal physical therapy can help eliminate that pain faster.

We offer programs that include: Pregnancy, Pre & Postpartum, Urinary Incontinence, Pelvic Pain, Abdominal Pain & Scaring, SI Dysfunction, Breast Cancer Rehab, Menopause, Osteopenia & Osteoporosis, Diastasis Recti Recovery & Women's Exercise Programs.
